I live in an apartment that has a fireplace and hearth, but there's no place to store wood, it's expensive to buy in small quantities, time-consuming to tend to a fire and then clean up afterwards. I wanted warmth, ambience, and no fuss. I compared brands and found the most consistent positive reviews about Dimplex. I bought one of these units for my sewing room about three years ago. We like it well enough that my husband bought another for his office. Heats well, is quiet, and the style is attractive. The 'flames' look good enough to make the fireplace look pleasantly real. This is a great space heater that allows us to keep the thermostat down and not heat up the rest of the house.

We got this to boost the heat in a small apartment that is at the end of our regular warm-air heating system. It sits under a window, turns on and off with a simple remote control, and blows significant heat out across the floor. It works far better than our smaller portable 'heaters' which also are rated as 1500 watts. It is stable on the floor, cool to the touch, and adds an interestingly real ambience with its simulated flames. We had originally considered a small gas unit, but this does the job at less than 1/10th of the purchase price. And it seems more rugged than cheaper ones we've seen sold locally.

I never thought this would work in my 400 sq ft living room / dining room in my 1926 Craftsman house, i.e. no insulation and single pane windows - I live in Paso Robles CA. But the alternative was a $2,500 gas stove. I couldn't be happier with this unit. It heats up the room to a good comfort level. None of my relatives complain to me because it's too cold. The temp gets down to 29-30 now and it keeps the entire space comfortable. I was real skeptical that it could heat 400 sq ft with 9 foot ceilings but it does. Now all I have to wait for is my electric bill. The remote control is great and simple. I recommend this unit and it looks good nestled in the hearth of the non-working fireplace (earthquake damaged).

Saving money on fuel......my bedroom is upstairs and in order to get it warm I must set the thermostat up high during sleeping hours...with the stove on low and the door closed I can stay warm and program the thermostat to go on in the a.m. to heat the rest of the house which is single zone heating.
