Grill FAQs

Q: Is an electric grill economical to use?
A: Electric grills are by far more economical than gas and charcoal. Electric grills cost an estimated 10¢ per hour to operate compared to $1.50 per hour with a 30,000 BTU gas grill. A ten-pound bag of standard charcoal can cost around $10, and a refill propane tank can cost an estimated $40. An electric grill costs about as much to operate as a coffee maker with no replacement fuel to buy. Cheaper gas grills also have a limited lifespan as the burners tend to burn out after a 1-2 years. Replacement burners range in cost depending on the size, but often the burner can cost up to half the original price of the grill!

Q: Is an electric grill portable?
A: Electric grills are highly portable. Built in and plug in models are available and if you’re looking for a grill that can be easily moved look at the smaller portable versions that can be used anywhere you have access to an outlet. Electric grills are great also for people who don’t have a covered porch to store their outdoor grill in the winter. Even the outdoor models are easy to unplug and move when not in use.

Q: What if I don’t want to move my grill to storage – does it come with a cover?
A: Most of our electric grills offer an optional cover to purchase. The Fire Stone Legacy comes with a cover. Constructed of highly durable stainless steel, outdoor electric grills are tested to withstand extreme conditions including bad weather.

Q: Does my electric grill come with a cigarette lighter adapter so I can use it from my car?
A: While an electric grill does not come with an adapter, you can buy a power inverter that hooks up to your car adapter and transforms the current into a conventional AC current that will run any household appliance. So, let’s say you want to take your grill tailgating, but you won’t have access to an outlet – with a power inverter you hook up directly to your car battery and viola, you’re cooking.

Q: Can the grill be cleaned easily?
A: Electric grills are very easy to clean! All models feature a drip pan that collects dripping under the cooking surface that can be disposed of easily. Several grills feature a removable cooking grate that is dishwasher safe, so it may be the easiest part of the meal to clean up. One customer suggested pouring drippings into a container of sand with holes in the bottom. The water filters through the sand leaving the grease on the top level and easy to dispose.

Q: Will food grilled on an electric grill taste the same as food grilled on gas or charcoal?
A: Food will taste even better. You have more control over the temperature and heat distribution with an electric grill, which means your food will be cooked evenly, thoroughly, and without charred spots every time. Not only will it taste better because it’s been cooked properly, but it will also taste better because there is no chemical aftertaste from lighter fluid and gas. You taste only the natural flavors of the food. The possibilities are endless. You can even add juices, marinade, or wine to the drip pans to infuse flavor into your food as it cooks. One customer said he added cranapple juice to the drip pan and created the best ribs he had in years!

Q: Are there any dangers using an electric grill?
A: As with any electric appliance, safety precautions should be used when operating an electric grill.
  • Never immerse or expose cords, plug, or heating element in water or other liquid.
  • Visually inspect cord, plug, and connections for damage and wear before operation.
  • Turn controls to the “off” position before plugging or unplugging the grill.
  • Unplug grill from outlet when not in use and before cleaning.
  • Place cords where they won’t cause a tripping hazard.
With basic safety, electric grills are not dangerous to operate.

Q: Does the cook time differ from gas and charcoal grills?
A: Generally cook time is reduced because the grill heats up quickly. Several models, including the Dimplex PowerChef and the Fire Stone Cook Number, feature internal temperature settings that cook food to perfection every time. Cooking time with these grills varies depending on how well done you want your food, but generally the time is less than a gas or charcoal grill because there is no guesswork.

Q: How long can I expect my grill to last?
A: Most stainless steel models come with a lifetime warranty on the stainless components, so you can expect your stainless grill to last. Our manufacturers also offer 1, 3, and in some cases 5 year warranties to cover electrical components.
