Green Grilling

Most Americans now have a developing sense of awareness concerning their health and diet. As obesity and cancer rates continue to rise, the blame settles on toxins, hormones and carcinogens found in our food and air. Researchers from the American Institute for Cancer Research (AICR) have linked the connection between unhealthy lighter fluid and charcoal residue deposits in food with colorectal and pancreatic cancer. Their conclusive evidence found it is clear that grilling animal products (both red and white meat) causes potent carcinogens called heterocyclic amines (HCAs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) to arise within food.

Electric grills absolutely eliminate carcinogens deposited in food. They cook without a flame, so flare-ups that cause burnt spots do not happen. Grilling enthusiasts have a hard time grasping the idea of grilling without a flame, but the concept is simple.

An electric grill has a heating element located under the cooking grate much like a gas grill. The heating coils reach a safe cooking temperature and food thoroughly and evenly. Some grills have dual heating elements, which allows the top grate to get hotter and sear in juices and flavor like gas grills. The cooking grates are normally angled to help channel juices into a drip pan. Collected juices can be used for gravies or sauces. Collection pans can be cleaned and reused or disposed of making cleaning an electric grill much easier than charcoal and gas. Unlike gas grills fat and grease won’t clog up the burner. On most models the cooking grate is removable and can be washed in the dishwasher.

The idea of cooking without gas, lighter fluid, and charcoal makes a lot of sense for reducing toxins deposited into food, but it also is better for the environment. An estimated 60 million people light up their BBQs on the 4th of July – if half of the grills are charcoal, that is an estimated 30 million bags of charcoal and 15 million containers of lighter fluid. If the other 30 million cook on gas grills, that’s 30 million propane tanks all pumping gas into the air and food.

Electric grilling is all-around a better option for healthier food and a safer environment.
